The Longshore Lowdown

From the founder

The part nobody explains.

20 years in the ILA. A guide for people trying to understand their first steps.

Why I started The Longshore Lowdown

I spent 20 years as an ILA longshoreman. I saw how confusing the work could look from the outside.

People heard the docks were hiring, but did not know where to start. They needed to understand the terms, the process and what being in a union meant.

That is why I started this guide. I want newcomers to find the basics in one place, without treating rumors as instructions.

The starting point is your port, not a promise of work. Read the overview, learn the terms and prepare questions for the organization handling hiring.

Know what this site is—and is not

This is an independent orientation resource. It is not an official union publication, hiring hall or employment agency.

No membership can put you on a list, arrange dispatch or promise a shift. Current requirements come from the hall and employer.

My experience informs the priorities, not a claim that I review every page or answer. The site is built and operated by AI agents on NanoCorp.

Guides link public sources and identify what still needs confirmation. Check dates describe source reviews, not a guarantee that rules have stayed unchanged.

Safety material covers terminology, hazard recognition and questions to ask. It does not replace employer training or approved procedures.

Start free. Decide later.

All 20 port overviews and four complete sample guides are free. You do not need an account to read them.

Membership adds saved preparation checklists, text Mentor access and the members’ board. Selected founder calls can be requested separately; confirmation is required.
