Dispatch terminology and radio etiquette

Dispatch and work instructions are different

Dispatch concerns filling work assignments. A job order identifies work the employer needs filled; it is not your personal hiring guarantee.

The current USMX-ILA Master Contract requires locally agreed job-order fulfillment policies within its coverage. It does not publish every hall’s process.

Ask what casual, extra, list, call, and assignment mean in your local’s written policy. These words do not establish universal priority rules.

Check the employer, classification, date, reporting location, and confirmation contact. Registration, availability, and a confirmed assignment are different questions.

The Longshore Lowdown is independent and not affiliated with the ILA or any local.
