Reading hiring notices

Check issuer, date, coverage, credential wording, submission route, and the actual meaning of an announcement without claiming current openings.

Educational orientation only. Follow employer hands-on training, approved procedures, manufacturer instructions and site rules. These guides do not authorize equipment operation.

Sample excerpt — the first section of this authored guide.

An announcement needs its originating context

A hiring notice should be read as a dated document from a particular organization. This source set verifies no current local or employer notice for any port.

FTC warns that scammers use channels also used by legitimate employers. A familiar platform, copied logo, or reassuring message is not enough to establish an authentic announcement.

Prepare by finding the originating organization and asking whether the notice remains current. Check the application destination and what the announcement actually claims, rather than relying on a shared screenshot.

The Longshore Lowdown is independent and not affiliated with the ILA or any local. This guide does not announce openings or promise selection, employment, hours, or income.

Educational orientation only: this guide is not work authorization or a substitute for employer training and site rules. No application sequence for a particular local is invented here.

A credential is not evidence of hiring or blanket entry permission. Facility-specific rules and full online-renewal eligibility were not verified. Fee and processing information must be rechecked before publication. The fetched Apply subsection's pre-enroll link appears to target a renewal workflow; do not silently reuse that link as a new-applicant path.

USMX-ILA Master Contract Memorandum of Settlement

This is a memorandum modifying the 2018 contract, not a complete consolidated agreement. The prior contract, later amendments, local CBAs, current plan documents and local notices must be checked before advising a worker. An anniversary-hours threshold for wage progression is not a universal seniority or medical-benefit threshold. Do not use technology appendices as manufacturer evidence or operational instructions.

Job Scams

Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Consumer Advice · Last Checked: October 5, 2026

General guidance, not proof a specific local notice is genuine or fake. Distinguish paying a scammer for a promised job from legitimate TSA credential fees or an independent optional educational purchase. No privacy-law compliance analysis was performed.
